Tonnage Measurement Survey for Pleasure Craft Purposes

A tonnage measurement is a mandatory requirement for vessel registration. Similar to a Pleasure Craft Licence, registration assigns your boat a unique identification number. However, it also serves as a legal title system, establishing ownership. Registered vessels may fly the Canadian flag, reserve an exclusive name, and be used as collateral for a marine mortgage.

You must register your vessel with Transport Canada if:

• You require legal proof of ownership and nationality
• You plan to sail internationally under the Canadian flag
• You wish to secure exclusive rights to a vessel name
• The boat will be used for commercial or non-pleasure purposes (e.g., charters, workboats)
