FAQ
What is a marine survey? A marine survey is an in-depth inspection of a vessel to determine its condition, compliance, and value. This process evaluates the structural integrity, safety equipment, engine systems, and compliance with relevant regulations.
Why do I need a marine survey? A marine survey is essential when buying or selling a vessel, for insurance purposes, or to ensure compliance with safety standards. It helps identify any potential issues, provides a basis for valuation, and ensures your vessel meets relevant regulations.
What types of marine surveys do you offer? We offer condition and valuation surveys for insurance and purchase purposes, as well as damage assessments.
How long does a marine survey take? The duration of a survey depends on the size and complexity of the vessel, but most surveys take between 3 to 6 hours. Larger vessels or those requiring specialized inspections may take longer.
What should I prepare before a marine survey? Ensure the vessel is clean, accessible, and ready for inspection. All equipment should be functional, and if the vessel is on the water, it should be prepared for a sea trial. Having relevant documentation, such as maintenance records and registration papers, is also helpful.
Can you perform a sea trial during the survey? Yes, sea trials can be included as part of the survey if the vessel is in operational condition. A sea trial assesses the performance of the engine, steering, and other critical systems while the boat is under way.
What happens if the survey reveals problems with the vessel? If any issues are found, the survey report will provide details of the findings and the recommended actions. Depending on the severity, you may negotiate repairs with the seller, adjust the valuation, or, in some cases, reconsider the purchase.
How soon will I receive the survey report? At Marine Surveys Canda, we have a 5-business day turnaround policy on our survey reports.
Can I attend the survey? Yes, you are more than welcome to attend the survey, however, we do ask clients to stay off the vessel during the inspection. This is to allow the surveyor the necessary space to conduct the survey thoroughly and safely.
Do you assess vessels for compliance with Transport Canada regulations? Absolutely. We assess vessels for compliance with Transport Canada safety and regulatory requirements, ensuring that your boat is fit for Canadian waters and meets all mandatory standards.
What is a valuation survey? A valuation survey is an assessment of the current market value of the vessel. This type of survey is often required for insurance purposes, determining loan value, or as part of a sale.
How much does a marine survey cost? The cost of a marine survey depends on the type and size of the vessel, as well as the scope of the survey. Please go to the page of the survey you are interested in, where you will find a link for an instant quote for your specific vessel.
Do you offer surveys for commercial vessels? Yes, we offer surveys for both recreational and commercial vessels, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and providing thorough assessments for safety, condition, and valuation.
